Top 15 Things to Do in Santiago, Chile (South America)

Updated: Oct 4, 2024

Contrary to popular opinion, Santiago was a loved, memorable, busy, and fun city to explore. I felt remarkably safe during my explorations. While Chile ranks among the more expensive destinations in South America, volunteering proved to be an excellent option for sustained backpacking or traveling.

Santiago has undergone significant development, adopting a more Americanized approach in recent years. Walking through the streets often felt reminiscent of New York City, with many familiar brands and chains found in the USA. It served as an excellent destination for resupplying and rejuvenating during my travels.

  • For longer stays lasting beyond a few days, I highly recommend getting a bip! card for the bus system. It's incredibly helpful for navigating the various neighborhoods, especially considering that Ubers and taxis can quickly add up in cost.

  • Must try: Completo (Chilean-style hot dog) and a terremoto (wine cocktail with pineapple ice cream)

To make the most of your time in Santiago, I recommend following my top 15 things to do.
