This travel guide will provide you with the basic and most necessary things to do in La Paz, Bolivia. For me, it was one hell of a trip!
Recommended amount of time: 2-3 days
STORYTIME:
After a chaotic turn of events in Uyuni, Bolivia, my journey to La Paz took an unexpected detour. As soon as I set foot in Uyuni, disaster flooded. I found myself fainting for the first time ever, collapsing in a restaurant all the while trying to avoid an embarrassing incident. Waking up in a cold sweat on the floor of the restaurant, I was in a panic, realizing I needed to confide in this new companion I was traveling with. Fortunately, he was incredibly understanding, offering support as I struggled to even stand.
Weak and in pain, I managed to make it to the bus station with his help, though the journey ahead seemed daunting. Throughout the night bus ride, my discomfort only intensified, with frequent trips to the restroom becoming more and more painful. At times, exhaustion would even lead me to doze off on the toilet rather than face the trek back to my seat.
Upon reaching La Paz, my condition hadn't improved. Despite my friend attributing it to altitude sickness, I could hear my body speaking illness in a different way. Seeking advice from a trusted mentor whose urgent response suggested medical attention immediately.
Stumbling upon a clinic where I pleaded for an examination, I felt so out of place in this foreign territory. Afraid and nervous, I could not have anticipated the intensity of my situation. Diagnosed with a parasite and salmonella as the doctor said "We need to submit you to the hospital immediately, for at least three days, and start antibiotics now."
Admitted to the hospital for what felt like an eternity, I found comfort and trust in the care of the medical staff at Clínica Alemana. Their gentleness and attention eased my fears, providing round-the-clock monitoring and a ton of snacks! Despite the language barrier and being far from home, the cleanliness, private room, meals, and medical assistance were top-notch.
a. General Tips about Bolivia:
To prevent feeling unwell in La Paz, take my advice:
Avoid street food
Brush your teeth with bottled water if you have a sensitive stomach
Seek black charcoal when an upset stomach arises
Stick to bottled water and cooked meals
Be vigilant with hygiene
And if fate leads you to Clínica Alemana, no stress, you're in great hands.
Must try: Salteñas (local empanadas)
2. Place of stay
AIRBNB Penthouse: This is no ordinary AIRBNB. This is a gorgeous, fairly priced, double-floored penthouse with a killer view of La Paz city. Safe with a doorman and locally centered with grocery stores, cafes, shops, and restaurants nearby. Absolutely perfect to split with another person.
3. Activities
Death Road ALL DAY Bike Tour: If you're coming to La Paz you know one excursion is a must...The Death Road! This is an absolute must-do when in La Paz! I booked this exhilarating excursion through Wild Rover, and let me tell you, opting for the cheaper company, ONE, is the smart choice. Trust me, the experience is identical to the pricier option, Altitude. The only distinction is the meal offering – ONE provides a single plate from the buffet, while Altitude has an all-you-can-eat deal. As for the guides, they were fantastic! If they suggest adding ziplining to your adventure, don't hesitate – go for it!
Get lost on the Telefericos: Hop on one and just keep going!
Witches Market: Colorful, cheap, crafty, and witchy ~ The best market of all La Paz. Eventually, you may notice a repetition in offerings – that's your cue to move on! Plus, the area has fantastic cafes to relax after your shopping spree.
Mirador Killi Killi: A short hike to a great viewpoint of the city!
Free Walking Tour: Walk to any hostel (or search online) about walking tours! It's the best way to see the city and submerge yourself in culture and history!
Party at Wild Rover: A chain hostel known for its wild parties and crowd. It is THE hostel filled with backpackers and travelers. A crazy place to party, but the best place to stay at if you like calmer vibes.
Despite the radical setback, La Paz took care of me and I am forever grateful.
Next stop: Copacabana, Bolivia (Lake Titicaca) via day bus.
Xoxo,
Chelsey
