A Travel Guide Through Huaraz, Peru (South America)

Updated: Aug 9, 2024

While this is a great place to hike, with the main attraction being Lagoon 69, I don't recommend spending time doing anything else here. This travel guide for Huaraz, Peru is short and simple because there is nothing else to do. I came to Huaraz on a late-night bus, spent that day relaxing and planning, and the next day doing the hike. That night after the hike, I hopped on another night bus. It was a lot of moving but luckily the hostel I stayed at was accommodating and the night buses were comfortable.

Recommended amount of time: 1-2 days.

  1. Place of stay

  • Andes Hostel: Despite being incredibly affordable (around 4 USD a night), this hostel was great for a brief one-night stay! The owner graciously accommodated our early arrival at 5 am from the Lima night bus, allowing us to check in without any hassle. Even after we checked out and embarked on a day hike, they kindly permitted us to shower and rest until our night bus departure.

2. Lagoon 69 Information

  •  A gorgeous hike from start to finish. Not super demanding although the altitude is what gets to you. Had to make a few stops on the way up.

    • Depending on the season, I recommend dressing lightly with extra layers. As it gets more demanding, you'll be happy to peel off layers without a hassle.

    • Pack a lunch for when you arrive at the top and maybe a few snacks for the ride back. They bring you to a place to eat breakfast but you can always bring your own stuff.

    • To book this tour, I recommend walking around/near the main square to find a tour company. Do not take the first price they give you or the first company you come across. This is because there is no food or extra benefits included. Booking the “tour” is really just a ride there and back.

3. Restaurants

  • Cafe Andino: A boho-inspired cafe with amazing food, coffee, and sweet treats. The music was all soul, the vibes were relaxed, and the wifi was great!

  • Fruta Andina: A simple spot for a cheap breakfast combo. Left satisfied and full!

  • Paulino’s Indian Cuisine: The one and only spot we hit for dinner- Indian! Can’t go wrong here.

Next stop: Huanchaco via night bus (which I do not recommend)

  • Smarter to go straight to Máncora if seeking a solid beach town

Xoxo,

Chelsey
